Theatrical Marketing Cheerleader · Cultural Historian · DJ
The long version.
My career has never fit neatly into one description. I study Black Queer cultural history. I build audiences for film and movie theaters. I compose film scores and DJ. What drives me is my passion for honoring the Black Queer cultural architects who are rarely celebrated for their immense contributions to American culture.
The Story
Theo George is a theatrical marketing (cheer)leader who believes, deeply, that going to the movies together is one of the last truly communal experiences we have left. He has deep experience building audiences for film and movie theaters from Baltimore’s only nonprofit cinema to the Brooklyn Academy of Music to the Documentary Producers Alliance.
Theo currently works as the Director of Marketing at Cinema United, the largest trade association representing movie theatre owners across the U.S. and around the world, where he leads creative and strategic marketing for the organization and its annual industry event, CinemaCon. Before Cinema United, he served as the Lead Cinema Marketing Manager at BAM (Brooklyn Academy of Music) and Marketing Director for the Maryland Film Festival/SNF Parkway Theatre.
Earlier in his career, Theo worked as a Digital Strategist for the National Center for Transgender Equality, contributing to landmark efforts including the first-ever LGBT Congressional Caucus on transgender violence and the 2015 U.S. Trans Survey — the largest national survey of transgender people ever conducted.
A proud Baltimorean, Theo traces his vocation as a scholar of Black Queer cultural history to the summer he spent as a Ronald E. McNair Scholar at UMBC when he researched African American cultural resistance in Old West Baltimore, learned about the queer roots of Baltimore Club Music, and met the version of himself he would one day become.
He holds a Master’s in Arts Management from Carnegie Mellon University and a Bachelor’s in Africana Studies from UMBC. He lives in Los Angeles with his partner and their Bernese Mountain dog puppy, Kali Beary.
